Chanthaburi is a small town near the coast away from the hustle and busle of Bangkok a sleepy town untill the weekend when gem dealers come from around the world to attend one of the many gem markets that open here then.
They take many forms from inside well lit trading centres to deals done on the street or in small out door booths that can be as simple as a few tables and chairs a set of scales an eye loupe and some tweezers.
Here you will see many varietys of gemstones being bought and sold you on a good day will see Ruby, Sapphire in many colours blue sapphire yellow sapphire green sapphire pink sapphire as well as purple and all maner of colour.
From time to time you will see emerald, Diamond, as well as blue zircon pink zircon and white zircon from just across the border in Cambodia.
Many of the prices for things like Burmeise Ruby and Cambodiaon zircon are cheaper here than travelling to those countrys to and buy.
How It Works Here.
Many dealers here travel around the world direct to the mines and buy direct they then ship the rough uncut gemstones back to there factorys to cut here in Thailand well known as one of the best cutting centres in the world.
Most of these dealers specalize in one or two types of gemstones for example Tourmaline from nigeria or spinel or Burmeise Ruby. This helps authenticate the gem as genuine as you know the dealer where the gems came from and that they are natural.
Most of the factorys will cut then sell direct to the dealers based in Chanthaburi then sell the rest to dealers that travel down to trade at the weekend. Many dealers are now travelling from countrys like Sri Lanka and Cambodia buying Thai or african gemstones to take back to sell as gems from there own country so beware.
We have heard many stories of Thai blue sapphires and yellow sapphires being bought here then sold in Sri Lanka as from there.
Also rough dark blue sapphire being bought to be sold again in Cambodia as Pallin gemstones.
We have many factorys here that also treat gemstones heating for sapphires lead glass treatments for Ruby but all these are done above board and are declared as such here when sold.
The trouble lies when down the line dealers from out of town buy and resell with out disclosing any treatments done to the gems.
The Rising cost of gemstones.
As with any resource the cost is dependent on supply and demand. For example rare gems such as Tanzanite which is a thousand times rarer than diamond still doesnt comand the price that this would imply.
Nowdays some of the biggest buyers for shipping out of the country are China and India. Because these countries as well as others such as malaysia now have large amounts of spare cash they have entered the buying gems in a large way for example China is a massive buyer now of Tourmaline and are willing to pay high prices for good quality Tourmaline.
India is a big buyer of ruby and emerald because of this and the large amounts these countries are willing to spend the price has risen hugely this year alone. As western europe and the USA start to slow down spending on gems the imerging coutries are taking over the lead buyers for certain gems. For years these countries didnt have the money to spend on high end jewellery this has now changed so if the traditional coutries still wish to buy they will have to pay the rising cost or will find they are unable to buy
in there market place.
